Autisic Spectrum (ASD) Test for Adults

Take our online adult autism test and see whether you have any traits of autism.

Seeking a formal autism diagnosis

Our autism test is a screening tool, not a diagnostic instrument. A formal diagnosis of autism involves thorough evaluations, standardised tools, and clinical expertise.

A formal diagnosis of autism can be a turning point in your understanding of yourself; the support you seek in light of a diagnosis can be transformative. Whilst our tests and quizzes are a great starting point in indicating autistic traits, we know a formal diagnosis is often the next step; we are proud to work with formal diagnosis partners that can help you obtain it. These trusted organisations go beyond simply confirming autism; they can give you the confidence and clarity needed to begin navigating the world in a way that makes sense for you.

Following a formal diagnosis, Exceptional Individuals can help embed support, such as workplace adjustments, into your life. From connecting you with neuroinclusive job opportunities, to helping you seek a Workplace Needs Assessment, Exceptional Individuals can guide you towards not only a formal diagnosis, but a more autism-friendly life, too.

Am I autistic?  Free online autism (ASD) test

Our free autism test for adults can help determine if you have traits associated with autism or being on the autistic spectrum. From the results of this test, you can begin to understand your brain better and seek a formal diagnosis if desired. Common questions among individuals are ‘Am I autistic?’ and "do I have ASD?", often for a variety of reasons, such as:

  • You or your family have had questions about your behaviour from childhood or in adulthood.
  • Things have happened at work or home that have made you reflect on how you interact with others or respond to certain situations.
  • You’re just curious about yourself and your behaviours and want to understand why.
  • You’ve been diagnosed with anxiety or another mental health condition and you think autism might be a factor.
  • You are a parent of a child with autism and are recognising traits in yourself.

Our free online autism test can offer insights into your behaviours and tendencies that may be linked to autism and being on the autistic spectrum. This may then lead to you seeking a formal diagnosis which our partners can help provide.

If you have completed our test and the results suggest you may have symptoms of Autism you may wish to seek a formal diagnosis. We have a number of formal autism assessment providers. Simply visit our autism diagnosis page and get in touch to start the process.

Autistic spectrum (ASD) test

Autism is a spectrum, which means there is a wide range of traits and conditions that present with varying levels of severity. For example:

  • Social communication and interaction challenges such as difficulty responding to social cues, difficulties forming relationships etc.
  • Restricted and repetitive behaviours, interests, or activities such as having intense interests in specific topics, sticking to routines and rituals etc.
  • Sensory sensitivities such as heightened sensitivity to sound, light, or textures.

Individuals with autism may show some traits and not others, and some may struggle more severely than others. With so many variations of this condition, it is therefore called a ‘spectrum’ to acknowledge it is not a single, uniform condition.

The stigma around autism is changing as more people are recognising the spectrum of the condition. Our autism quiz covers the entire autistic spectrum to provide a detailed insight before the next step of diagnosis.

Who is this autism test for?

This free autism test is suited to adults who think they may experience traits of autism, such as difficulty with social interaction and interpreting others’ emotions, or strongly preferring to stick to a fixed routine and familiar things. However, as autism is a spectrum condition, individual traits will differ from person to person.

This test is also great for anyone wanting to understand more about their behaviours and if there is a reason they respond in a certain way to specific situations.

Do you have any symptoms of Autism?

The following online adult autism test helps identify whether you have any traits of autism. The questions look to see if you have any difficulty dealing with social situations, understanding aspects of language, multitasking, and more.

Why is it worth taking our online autism test?

While this quiz is not a diagnosis of autism, our free autism test for adults can give you an indication of whether you have traits of autism. If you score highly on this quiz, you may wish to speak to your GP about arranging a formal diagnosis. Alternatively, take our diagnosis questionnaire and we can match you with a private diagnostic practitioner based on your needs and location.

A diagnosis can help you to access the support you need and can help explain to others what this support should be.

Test results indicate Autism? You can schedule a Workplace Needs Assessment

We want to be very clear that these tests are not a diagnosis. However, you don’t need to have a formal diagnosis to get a free autism workplace needs assessment.

The workplace needs assessment lasts up to an hour, where you will be asked questions about your strengths and weaknesses. The assessor will then put in place recommendations on how to support you best in your place of work.

To see if you are eligible for a free autism workplace needs assessment, fill out our enquiry form today.

What else should I do if the test suggests I could be autistic?

  • Don't panic, autism affects more than 700,000 in the UK.
  • Read some trustworthy resources to find out more about autism.
  • Speak to friends and family.
  • Talk to your employer if you feel comfortable.
  • Contact your GP and think about getting a formal diagnosis if you're comfortable doing so.

The formal autism diagnosis process

An initial appointment

This is an opportunity to discuss your symptoms with a professional, like a GP, to decide whether an autism assessment should be pursued. If so, a GP may do a preliminary assessment, and refer you to a specialist team. Both NHS and private options are available.

You may also need to complete a pre-assessment questionnaire about your developmental history and current behaviours.

A multi-disciplinary assessment

At this stage, a professional such as a psychiatrist or psychologist conducts interviews with you and potentially your family, observations of your behaviour, and assessments using standardised tools. Those tools can include ADOS (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule), or ADI-R (Autism Diagnostic Interview - Revised).

A diagnostic decision

Using what the clinical team has learned about you, they will base their decision against DSM-5 or ICD-11 criteria, and you will learn the outcome during a feedback session. They will also provide a diagnostic report with a diagnosis, some recommendations, and some support suggestions.

Post-diagnosis support

You should be signposted to support services, benefits, educational or occupational support, and therapy following a diagnosis of autism.

What workplace adjustments can be made for those with an autism diagnosis?

The kinds of adjustments needed in the workplace will vary between each individual with autism - there are no one-size-fits-all changes that can be made to suit everyone. However, these are some of the most common workplace adjustments made for those with autism in our experience:

Communication

This could include clear and direct instructions both verbally and in written form, as well as structured agendas for meetings, and an avoidance of ambiguous language, idioms, and sarcasm.

Environment

This could include a quiet workspace, reduced sensory disturbances (such as lights and crowded spaces), and noise-cancelling headphones. Working from home is also a popular environmental adjustment which can allow those with autism to work in an optimal space for them.

Routine

This can include a predictable schedule and advanced notice of any changes, with clear routines and expectations.

Social and managerial support

This could include a buddy or mentor, autism awareness training for colleagues and managers, and regular feedback sessions, like one-to-ones.

Task and workflow support

This could include breaking tasks into more manageable chunks with clear deadlines, providing visual aids like a checklist, and allowing extra time for task completion.

How much does a formal autism diagnosis cost privately?

The costs will vary depending on the provider, but in our experience it can cost between £600–£1200 GBP (approximately $770–$1,550 USD).

Autism Test FAQs

Is the autism test accurate?
The test is only an indicator based on questions that will also be asked in a clinical setting. It's important to emphasise that our Autism quiz has a simplified scoring system and interpretation and should only be utilised in conjunction with a professional evaluation by a qualified healthcare provider. They can assist in identifying potential symptoms, but a comprehensive assessment by a healthcare professional is necessary for an accurate diagnosis.
What does the autism test involve?
The test will get you to answer 50 statements where you will be asked about your level of agreement or disagreement with each statement on a scale.
How long does the autism test take?
The test may take anywhere from 5-15 minutes to complete.
How does autism overlap with other conditions?
Autism can share traits with other conditions and disorders, and can often co-occur with them. These conditions include anxiety, ADHD, depression, and OCD. An official autism diagnosis can help differentiate these conditions so that the appropriate support and/or treatment can be sought.
