Have you ever taken the time to self-reflect and wonder if you are neurodivergent? It’s a position many people find themselves in because we’re not born with the knowledge of our neurotype. Neurodivergent individuals instead discover their neurodiversity by noticing differences in their behavior compared to many of their peers and investigating it, whether by themselves or with some help.

Neurodivergent is an umbrella term that describes people with different neurotypes, which include people with conditions like autism, ADHD, and dyslexia. Being neurodivergent is mainly about being different as neurodivergent individuals have unique ways of thinking, processing information, communicating, and experiencing the world.

One way to help understand your potential neurodivergence is with an online neurodiversity quiz. These quizzes can be a handy starting point for exploring your neurotype. Today I will discuss why you may take an online neurodiversity quiz by covering what they are, their role, and what to do after taking one.

Can an Online Quiz Tell Me If I Am Neurodivergent?

An online neurodiversity quiz is a test you can take to get an idea on if you’re neurodivergent. Some quizzes are about raising the possibility of you being neurodivergent in general while others focus on a specific health condition.

These quizzes ask the participant questions related to neurodiverse traits so they can think about their own life and how much it aligns with the neurodivergent experience. For example, a question about routines makes the participant wonder how much of their life revolves around them.

Your results are going to be based on how many answers align with having neurodivergent traits. Saying you have a neurodivergent trait one time isn’t going to confirm you’re neurodivergent. Instead, your results suggest you may be neurodivergent if you say yes to having multiple neurodivergent traits.

What’s important to remember about the results is that they are not going to formally diagnose you as neurodivergent. If you want a formal diagnosis, then you’ll have to consult a professional. Instead, think of the results as a way to know whether you’ll want to dig deeper into learning more about your neurotype.

One other detail to mention is that you can take one of these quizzes at any time. Many neurodivergent people discover their neurodivergence during adulthood so there’s no shame in taking one of these tests if you’re an adult.

The Role of Online Neurodiversity Quizzes

Even if an online neurodiversity quiz isn’t going to diagnose you, they can still help you in other ways. Here are some examples:

Helps You Notice Neurodivergent Traits

A neurodiversity quiz asks the participant to self-reflect. You may be asked if social situations overwhelm you or if you ever felt different from your peers. This self-reflection can help you identify if you have neurodivergent traits.

A Starting Point for Looking into Your Neurodiversity

Your quest to understand your potential neurodiversity has to start somewhere. Even if an online neurodiversity test doesn’t diagnose you, it can give you an idea if you’re neurodivergent or not. If your results align towards being neurodivergent, then you can use them as an excuse to dig deeper into the question.

Helps You Identify Questions to Explore

Completing an online quiz can leave you with many unanswered questions like what is X condition or what are the experiences of neurodivergent individuals. The good news is that these questions give you your next objective as you can focus on answering those questions after finishing the quiz.

Next Steps

Ok, you got the results of your quiz, so where do you go from there? As I keep saying, an online quiz won’t confirm your neurodiversity but you can use them as a means to determine your next steps. Here are some examples of what to do after you receive your results:

Explore the Suggested Traits or Neurotype

If you discover you may have a condition like dyspraxia or Tourette’s Syndrome, then take some time to learn more about them. Much like taking an online neurodiversity quiz, researching a neurodivergent condition can give you a chance to identify if any traits affiliated with it can be applied to your own life.

Look into Support Options

Neurodivergent people often need support in their daily lives. What the support is or how much someone needs will vary. Maybe you need specific workplace accommodations or to meet with a therapy group that’ll understand your experiences. As long as you research what support is available and if they are accessible to you, you should be able to receive a helping hand.

Seek a Formal Diagnosis

One way to confirm you are neurodivergent is with a formal diagnosis. A formal diagnosis is lengthy but comes with the benefits of having a professional confirm your neurotype and making some support options accessible to you. Just remember that formal diagnosis confirms a specific condition so they won’t broadly call you neurodivergent.

Self-Identify as Neurodivergent

If you don’t want to seek a formal diagnosis, that’s fine. A formal diagnosis is not required to identify as neurodivergent. The test results can be part of a wider exploration into your neurotype. With enough research and self-reflection, you could come to the conclusion that you’re neurodivergent on your own and begin to self-identify.

Taking some time to complete an online neurodivergence quiz can be a helpful starting point for looking into whether you’re neurodivergent. They ask participants to reflect on their own lives and consider how much they line up with the neurodivergent experience. Once you have your results, you can use them to determine your next steps.

You’re not going to be formally diagnosed from taking these quizzes but being diagnosed isn’t the point. An online neurodivergence quiz is one method out of many to help answer the question “Am I neurodivergent?”. Maybe you want to take it before going through with a diagnosis or use it to determine if you’ll want to do more research. Either way, these quizzes are one tool out of many you can use to better understand yourself.
